My senior year of college I took a computer aided machining (CAM) class where I learned the basics of G code and utilized CAD and CAM to develop small scale projects using CNC Haas mills, CNC desktop mills, X carve router, laser cutters, and water jet machines. The following are some of the projects I worked on that I documented.
Mario Question Block

The finished part is a 2” x 1” x 1” block with features inspired by a Mario Question Block from the video games. There are four machined faces to this part. The front and the back side, which are the longer sides and contain both the question block and the brick block, are identical and mirrored about the center. One side face contains just the question block, while the other contains just the brick block. The front side in an isometric view and the top side can be seen in the gallery below.

I created this custom name block with a desktop CNC mill by specifying tools, speeds, feeds, cut depths and tool paths in Solidwork's HSM Works. From HSM Works, I auto-generated G-code that I then put into the CNC controller FlashCut to operate a desktop CNC milling machine to cut out the part as I modeled it on Solidworks. This block was cut from a 2'' x 1'' x 1'' rectangular prism of 63D prototyping foam (AKA butterboard foam).
